This unusual behavior formed a local legend of unearthly proportions. The lions of Tsavo were said to be ghosts, or wraiths. Their bodies were inhabited by the lost souls of evil men. Through the shadows, men fired their guns in vain. With one paw in this world and another paw in the next, no living thing in Tsavo would ever be safe again.
